Chapter 20

Many Faces

Mid-2109

Silkroad Trading Company

Altairius Prime

Orchamus marveled as he walked through the streets of Altairius Prime’s capital city. It was unlike anything he’d seen, and given his job, he’d seen a lot of planets and cities. The capital of the Altairian home world was incredible. The buildings reached into the heavens as the rays from the system’s dual suns danced off the strange materials they were made from. It created an incredible display of light throughout the city, almost like light hits a prism, refracting as it passes through.

Approaching his destination, he looked at the retail store called the Silkroad Trading Company. Yup, this is the place, Orchamus thought, recalling the information he’d been given by the immigration officials.

Entering the store, he looked at the shelves in amazement. The owner had managed to stock them with all sorts of luxury goods and miscellaneous items from Earth. The logistical network the owner must have established to make this possible reinforced Orchamus’s decision to choose this model to meet his needs.

As he walked through the aisles, the shelves gave him the appearance of being on Earth, in a regular store you’d find in any town or city. He saw Altairians and other alliance members milling about, searching for whatever Earth item they thought might be neat to own or give as a gift. Then a voice called out the name he’d been given. It was go time, time to put his plan into motion.

“Ah, there you are, John. They told me you’d be on your way here. How was the trip in?” a boisterous man named Rand Wilson exclaimed, walking toward him. Rand had signed up with the Altairius Prime embassy to be a liaison to new potential business owners. It offered him the possibility of important connections, and it gave newcomers a chance to understand all the necessary qualifications to do business on this planet.

Orchamus gave the man a warm smile as he greeted him. “It was great, Rand. Thank you for allowing me a chance to see how your store runs. It’s a big deal setting a storefront up this far from Earth. So much to learn and so much risk involved in it.”

“You sure are right about that, John. I’m just glad I can help a fellow entrepreneur. It’s guys like us that build the economy. I’m just glad you came to see the place in person. Some folks think they can make these decisions from afar, but you don’t know how tough it is until you’ve traveled here and seen it yourself.”

“Amen to that, Rand. I must imagine it’s a challenge keeping a place like this supplied?”

The man laughed for a second. “Oh man, you don’t know the half of it. There were a couple of times I didn’t think our store was going to make it. Maintaining a steady supply of products from Earth is hands down the hardest thing you’ll have to deal with. Let’s go back to my office. We can talk more there.”

He led Orchamus to an office in the back, making small talk as they went.
